Twelve-year-old Daniel Martin's so-called fun day of outdoor exploring has started out terribly. An argument with his nagging little brother has him feeling not only resentful, but also a bit shameful. Strangely enough, after an unorthodox greeting from two woodland gnomes, Daniel begins to rediscover the value of friends and family. For now, however, he must put aside his mixed feelings and help the noble woodland gnomes, who are experiencing a family crisis of their own. However, standing in the group's way, the one causing all the chaos and mayhem, is the mean and dastardly troll, Odium.
