and distributed by Anheuser-Busch at a rate of more than a million copies a year,
was destroyed in a fire at the Seventh Cavalry headquarters in Fort Bliss, Texas, in
1946. Or was it? When Charley Lee Stillwater dies of an apparent heart attack at the
Veterans' Home of Wyoming, Walt Longmire is called in to try to make sense of a
partial painting and a Florsheim shoebox containing one million dollars, both found
in Stillwater's foot locker, sending the good sheriff on the trail of a dangerous art heist.
Walt is fond of the veterans who sit outside the home and wave at passing cars,
and he felt a particular kinship with Charley Lee, making him all the more eager to
untangle the mystery of the deceased man's belongings. As he follows the money—
encountering some nefarious characters along the way—Longmire strives to make
sure that this investigation doesn't become his own next to last stand.

George Guidall returns to portray Sheriff Walt Longmire and the rest of Johnson's characters, whom fans have come to love. Guidall's voice is perfectly matched to Longmire, who is called into a complicated situation involving paintings from the time of Custer, suspicious Russians, and an art heist. Guidall masterfully performs the featured characters of this audiobook, a group of war veterans in souped-up wheelchairs. Delivering Johnson's well-researched text, Guidall educates listeners on the bloody history of the West and paints an atmospheric picture of the scenes back then and now. The result is a listen that is entertaining, quick paced, and engaging. Listeners might want to start earlier in the series to best understand the characters and relationships that drive the plot. A real-life painting, Cassilly Adams’s Custer’s Last Fight, which was reproduced in the millions in the late 19th century and destroyed in a fire at Fort Bliss, Tex., in 1946, provides the backdrop for bestseller Johnson’s intriguing 16th novel featuring Absaroka County, Wyo., sheriff Walt Longmire (after 2019’s Land of Wolves). When Charley Lee Stillwater, a friend of Walt’s, dies of a heart attack at the Veterans’ Home of Wyoming, $1 million in cash and what appears to be an artist’s study for a portion of the Custer painting turn up in the retired army veteran’s room. Walt sets out to authenticate the partial painting—and to determine the source of the cash. The stakes rise when someone steals the artwork after knocking out the museum curator who was about to examine it. More than one murder follows. At the exciting climax, Walt coolly estimates the number of stitches in his scalp he’s going to need after being shot by the surprising culprit he’s closing in on. Vietnam War vet Walt shows few signs of age in this consistently entertaining series. Agent: Gail Hochman, Brandt & Hochman Literary.
